Pond creation and restoration: the Park can help
Is there an old pond on a property? A wetland in poor condition? For landowners wishing to restore these habitats for frogs, toads, newts, dragonflies and other wildlife, the Park offers advice and financial support.
Through its Trames vertes project, the Park can cover part of the costs of restoring small ponds and wetlands within its territory. It also provides guidance on habitat improvements and coordinates the necessary work. Restoration work in wetland areas generally takes place in late autumn or early winter.
Landowners are required to commit to maintaining these ponds and managing them in ways that benefit amphibians for at least eight years, through a signed agreement.
This offer is subject to available funding.
Why protect and restore wetlands?
Native amphibian populations continue to decline despite numerous conservation efforts. With the exception of the alpine newt, alpine salamander and common frog, Switzerland’s 13 other amphibian species are classified as endangered or vulnerable.
The drying out of wetlands and the introduction of fish into previously fish-free ponds are among the main causes of this decline.
By creating or restoring a pond, landowners help amphibians survive while providing breeding habitats and ecological connections for many other species, including dragonflies.
