Stage info

he hike begins at Gruyères train station, right as you step off the train. The medieval town offers a charming and authentic detour. The route then gently leaves the town and climbs into the Chésalles forest. As you exit the forest, you're rewarded with a breathtaking view of the three "Dents" – Dent de Broc, Dent du Chamois, and Dent du Bourgo – an ideal moment to pause and enjoy the panorama.

The walk continues toward the marshy areas of the Létchyre plateau, through pastures and meadows. The path then skirts the upper part of the gravel pit between Enney and Villars-sous-Mont, following the foothills of the Vanil Blanc. It passes near the Pink Chapel and continues uphill towards Neirivue.

Above the last houses of Villars-sous-Mont, you cross the Loyettes stream via a charming shingle-covered bridge, built in August 2022 by local craftsmen. The trail continues along a wooded ridge before descending into the heart of the village of Neirivue, where this stage ends.

The history of the town of Gruyères is intimately tied to that of the family of counts of the same name. Mentioned for the first time in the 12th century, they distinguish themselves by their title (very few held this title amongst the counts of Savoie) and by their chronic money troubles which brought bankruptcy in 1555. Paradoxically, the poverty of this area is what preserved it through the centuries. The different landlords did not have disposal income to modernize their buildings. The first homes were built inside the castle walls, and the village then spread along one main street.

Combes Chapel
Built in 1897, the chapel is an example of neo-gothic architecture. Its decorative murals are of the same origin as it solid oak altar. The Virgin and Child still sit here today, surrounded by Saint Philomène and Saint Elisabeth.
