Rougemont – Les Plans – Les Combes

From the village center, the route follows the main road to an 11th century Cluny site and church.  Be sure to take time to look at the emblematic wood façades of the buildings, decorated with painted motifs. After the Cluny site, the route climbs above the railroad tracks to the hamlet of Crêt, where a path leads back to the main road. The route then follows a smaller road along the banks of the Sarine before crossing Flendruz stream. Follow the road across the valley floor to the hamlet of the Combes.

Highlights

The painted or carved facades of Rougemont

A rich group of 16th to 19th century wood homes can be seen on both sides of the main road. These buildings all share a common characteristic: their façades are either carved or painted. At the summit of each home, you will see its date of construction, a text which is often biblical, as well as the name of the owners and the carpenter. These carpenters inherited a beautiful trade leaving behind masterpieces to be enjoyed for centuries. The facade of the Auberge du Cheval blanc, constructed in 1810 by the carpenter Moïse Henchoz, is especially remarkable.

Rougemont's Saint-Nicolas Church

Rougemont's Saint-Nicolas Church was built by Cluny monks in the late 11th century, in 1080. The church's architecture has elements of Romanesque architecture (classical model Cluny Latin cross), as well as the Reformation and the Bernese presence (shortened transept, enlarged apse, single roof, Oberland-style steeple).  We can also observe the revival of reformation art in the early 20th century (paintings by Correvon, Rivier et Delachaux).
