Crésuz – Châtel-sur-Montsalvens – Broc – Les Marches – Gruyères

From the village center, walk the trail along the side of the hill which follows a historic swiss communications route to Chatel-sur-Montsalvens. Once you have left the village, the trail descends in direction of the Montsalvens ruins and follows the Jogne river across from the Chocolate Factory to Broc. Cross the pastures to visit Notre Dame Chapel. This chapel is the destination of a major pilgrimage in the canton of Fribourg. Continue down the trail to the Sarine river. Cross the Pont qui Branle (wobbling bridge), and climb to the remarkably well-preserved, medieval village of Gruyères.

Highlights

Montsalvens Castle

The ruins of Montsalvens Castle are the remains of an important impediment to the Jogne Valley. First mentioned in the 12th century, all that's left of Montsalvens Castle today is its tower, which was built around 1260. The site was restored in 1671 but was abandoned soon after.

Notre-Dame-des-Marches (Chapel)

This chapel is the most important sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin Mary in the canton of Fribourg. First mentioned in 1572, the chapel was reconstructed in 1705 by the Ruffieux brothers, all three of whom were priests and descendants of a long line of cheese merchants from Broc. The altar still features its original 1731 retable. Particularly remarkable is the statue of the Virgin and child, created in the 16th century by le Maître aux gros nez (the master with a big nose). Her red jewelry and embroidery were added in 1933 by artist Alexandre Cingria. The artist also created the chancel stained-glass (1944) which depict pilgrims. The stained-glass windows in the nave are the work of his son-in-law Emilio Beretta.
